Artist Statement

My subjects are common everyday objects. In these ordinary things, I see their living energy, their truth, despite their distressed quality.

It’s about the cycle of life. I’m very interested in contrasts: beauty verses decay, falsehood verses truth, life verses death, and utilitarian verses rubbish.

I look for contrasts in color, light/shadow and emotion\mood.

Predominately, I work in pastel. I love that pastel is an extension of my hand; there is no brush between me and the painting.

Once I was immobilized by mental illness. Painting for me is participation in life.

Meet DL Winn

Debbie Winn is a native of Colorado who paints in pastel. Currently, her subject matter is about distressed things and places. She also does some abstract. Debbie mostly works from still life’s or photographs in her studio.

Debbie studied philosophy at the University of Colorado in Denver. Currently, she studies at the Art Student League of Denver. She is a member of the Pastel Society of Colorado.
